Why publish another book on biblical typology? Haven’t people been doing that since Augustine of Hippo?
Well, books in English tend to be either unreadable or, frankly, wrong. The biggest and, for many, standard book was written by Patrick Fairbairn – erudite, scholarly, but completely inaccessible and unreadable, with sentences 100s of words in length. Also, his mega-tomes have no way of being used as reference books after reading.
A.W. Pink has written many helpful contributions to typology, but does tend to be rather over-enthusiastic about finding typical features of OT characters. This means that he lacks credibility, despite his works being valuable in many ways.
E.W. Bullinger, an Anglican, just seems to view types as figures of speech. This means that he and Pink are at opposite ends of the ‘typology-enthusiastic’ spectrum. In the middle is Fairbairn, balanced and biblical, but not consistent, readable or accessible.
So, a new, middle way analysis is required, that arrives biblically at a formal definition of what constitutes a valid biblical type, is readable, referencable and applied. See what you think.
